Not even long lines and a packed schedule deterred attendees from flocking to the School of the Future at ISTE 2018. PowerSchool’s never-before-seen display of unified technology was a hit with visitors, who got a firsthand look at how integrated solutions that connect the back office, classroom, and home can help educators, administrators, and families support student learning more effectively.
Now that the School of the Future has been unveiled, here’s an inside look at the technology that inspired so many attendees to walk its halls.
Visitors to the School of the Future are greeted by an onboarding station that makes registration and hiring a breeze. From teacher recruitment to student enrollment and everything in between, these back-office technologies help everyone get the school year started off right.
SCIENCE & CODING CLASSROOM
Attendees then move to a science classroom where students use a Microsoft 3D Paint program to explore the inner workings of a volcano and conduct coding experiments using Microsoft MakeCode for micro:bits. The lab is fueled by PowerSchool Unified Classroom and integrated Microsoft 365 software, which give staff, students, and families an easy way to view/create/complete assignments, communicate, track progress, and more.
Encouraging collaboration between teachers, students, and parents is a major focus of the School of the Future. And this station, which is powered by PowerSchool assessment, intervention, and Microsoft text-to-speech software, gives students the opportunity to join the teacher-parent conversation. These technologies provide a clear picture of performance and trends, giving all stakeholders the full view of student progress.
Your teacher has an inspiring lesson planned around engineering in a makerspace area utilizing exciting new technologies, but it just so happens to fall on a professional development day. There’s no need to postpone or cancel the lesson because the regular teacher will be out. TalentEd helps educators identify and request the most qualified substitute, who will then be able to use a lesson that’s already been built in Unified Classroom.
PROFESSIONAL LEARNING CENTER
With the right substitute secured, it’s now on to the professional learning center, where educators can keep track of their progress toward micro-credentials, earning badges along the way. An easy-to-understand dashboard also supports a collaborative platform where teachers can share best practices and use data, feedback, and analysis to improve the quality of their instruction.
Administrators are a big part of school and district success, which is why this station is dedicated to giving technology, curriculum, and operations staff the resources they need to make informed decisions. From finance to HR, cloud hosting to business analytics, and plenty in between, administrators get data and insights that help them lead.
Learning doesn’t stop when the school day ends. The PowerSchool mobile app empowers students to take education on the go with notifications that remind them when assignments are due and help them track grades and progress.
Study after study points to the importance of family engagement in student success, and the School of the Future is built to keep parents in the loop. The PowerSchool Parent Portal and PowerSchool Mobile help families stay on top of grades, school events, and more. Plus, the integrated Microsoft translation function helps users overcome language barriers. Visitors also get a sneak peek into a mobile app that uses gamification to augment students’ learning of algebra.
